How Can I Help You?

At one point or another each of us has worked in the service industry. For me it started as a 15 year old at Burger King! So, how does the outside world perceive those hard working underpaid people helping you every day? Unfortunately, less than human at times. That is what this blog is all about, this is a place for you to vent and let everyone know just because I'm behind the counter helping you doesn't mean you can treat me as any thing less than equal. Give us your worst of the worst stories, and maybe a little advice on how you should have been treated. Thanks again!!!!

For a time I worked as a server at an upscale restaurant. Serving people can often be tougher than just bringing them their food. I always hated interrupting their conversations to ask if they needed anything. People would always treat me as if I was bugging them. I use to play a game, I would stand at the table until someone realized I was there then I would ask if they needed anything. I remember a time where I stood there for at lease 3 minutes until someone acknowledged my presence. Listen people, while trying to serve you take the time to pay attention when your server comes to the table; they are just trying to help you!

I worked in a snack bar at a hospital during High School. I remember the doctors and nurses thinking they were so cool and so much better than I was. It really pissed me off. There was the occasional nurse or doctor that was nice but for the most part they were all bitches. My brother worked with me and he actually got fired for telling a nurse off after she was giving him a hard time about a sandwich he made her. I will never work in food service again! That is all.

On several occasions I have been working late in the newsroom at UVSC when the cleaning crew comes in to tidy up. One guy always empties the trash can under my desk and I've never spoken to him. Until now I didn't even realize how rude I have been. I usually try to be friendly to people I come in contact with, but this worker has been so invisible to me that I don't notice that I've become part of the problem.

I worked for the Huntington Beach Hilton as a pool side server. As people lounged by the pool I would take their orders and serve them right there in their pool chairs. One thing always suprised me. I would go around and pick up their trash after they finished eating or drinking. Often times big parties with big orders would have lots for me to clear away. I would stack up all their trash and so often they would get in my way playing smash ball or catch making it next to impossible to clean up their trash. Ha I thought it was so strange that they would make it so hard on me to do something just to help them out!

When I was bar tending at local restaurant I would get customers that would come in and order a verity of drinks. Since we were not a full scale bar often we would not carry the exact rum or liquor they were looking for. Therefor making it impossible to make the drink they desired. One time a customer actually asked for the manager because I couldn't make what he wanted. He actually thought I just didn't want to help him. Just because you are a customer doesn't mean you are always right!
